In the pitch-black ocean depths, male anglerfish don't just find a mate—they physically fuse into her body, becoming a permanent, parasitic sperm factory.

The bathypelagic zone of the deep ocean is a vast, desolate expanse where encounters between individuals of the same species are incredibly rare. To solve the challenge of finding a mate in the abyss, deep-sea anglerfish have evolved one of the most astonishing reproductive strategies in the animal kingdom: obligate sexual parasitism. Male anglerfish are born much smaller than females, lacking the iconic bioluminescent lure and large jaws.

Instead, they possess oversized olfactory organs designed to detect female pheromones across vast distances. Once a male locates a female, he bites into her abdomen. Shortly after latching on, the male releases specialized enzymes that dissolve the tissue of his own mouth and the female's skin.

Their circulatory systems fuse together, allowing the male to receive nutrients directly from the female's bloodstream. Over time, the male's eyes, fins, and internal organs atrophy, leaving behind little more than a pair of testes attached to her flank. Remarkably, the female's immune system does not reject the genetically distinct male tissue.

Scientists have discovered that anglerfish lack key genes responsible for adaptive immunity, enabling permanent tissue fusion without organ rejection.
